What is available for us this Lent?

  • Reflections via email: Sign up to the Lent reflection emails and receive daily messages straight to your inbox. The daily emails will offer Bible readings, short reflections and a practical challenge, as well as prayers linked to weekly themes.

  • Daily reflections via Everyday Faith app: You can read and listen to daily Lent reflections from 5 March through the Everyday Faith app, the new daily devotional app from the Church of England, which is available to download here.

This 2025 Lent programme is being managed by Mark Kenny, Clare Morgan and Henrie Harrington-Vogt. They can be contacted at lent@lcsb.uk.

This Lent, in the Lay Community, we are being encouraged to put down deep roots of hope by connecting with God who is always with us.  We will be doing this in several different ways, and we will be, especially, using the resources from The Church of England’s Lent theme for 2025 ‘Living Hope’ as our guide.

We have chosen this theme, and these resources, because things may not be easy for us at the moment, both individually and globally, and the theme of Living Hope offers us the opportunity to deepen our hope in God and be part of what God is doing to bring hope in the world.  The readings and reflections will explore how we can have hope in times of frustration or uncertainty; the hope found in joining with others; the invitation to notice signs of hope around us; the courage to face reality and pursue a hopeful future; and the ways God transforms death into life at Easter.

We also like these resources because they will also enable us to witness to our ecumenical charism in that we will be using resources provided mainly by the Church of England while also celebrating the Roman Catholic Jubilee Year with its emphasis on us all being Pilgrims of Hope.  As Pope Francis wrote in his Jubilee letter:  ‘we must fan the flame of hope that has been given us, and help everyone to gain new strength and certainty by looking to the future with an open spirit, a trusting heart and far-sighted vision. The forthcoming Jubilee can contribute greatly to restoring a climate of hope and trust as a prelude to the renewal and rebirth that we so urgently desire; that is why I have chosen as the motto of the Jubilee, Pilgrims of Hope.’  (https://www.cbcew.org.uk/jubilee-2025-letter-from-pope-francis/)

We also hope to run two online Lent Groups.  One on a Thursday evening at 20.00 in St Scholastica and one on a Friday morning at 09:30 (in the slot of Café with Benedict).  These groups will follow this broad outline, and will be a place for further inspiration, discussion and sharing.
